About the book

This book examines the ruling on the ignorant and on one who errs by interpretation (ta'wil) among the people of the qibla: is someone who has testified to the two testimonies of faith excused when he is ignorant of a matter of belief, or holds a mistaken view of it through interpretation? It sets out the scholars' views on excusing ignorance, on one ignorant of an attribute of Allah, on how the proof is established by the Qur'an and Sunna reaching a person, and on whether a solitary report (khabar al-ahad) gives knowledge, quoting at length from Ibn Hazm, Ibn Taymiyya, Ibn al-Qayyim and others.

Its aim is to reconcile two groups: one that does not excuse the interpreter, declaring him and those who excuse him unbelievers, and one that excuses him but calls the first group Kharijites. It asks whether one who does not excuse ignorance or interpretation is a Kharijite, and closes on the kinds and degrees of declaring someone an unbeliever (takfir).
