About the book

This book is a commentary on Surat al-Fatiha, the opening chapter of the Qur’an. It begins with where the surah was revealed, its names, its merits and some of its subtleties, then explains the seeking of refuge (isti‘adha) and the basmala, and goes through each of its seven verses, drawing on commentators and linguists such as al-Qurtubi, Ibn Kathir, al-Alusi, Ibn ‘Ashur and al-Razi.

Along the way the author discusses questions the surah raises: what worship is, its reality and conditions; why worship is paired with seeking help; the Straight Path; guidance and misguidance between compulsion and free choice; and who are “those who earned anger” and “those who went astray.”

Minor edits have been made to the original Arabic text.
